Ultra-efficient heat pipes enabled by nickel-graphene nanocomposite coatings: Concept and fundamentals

Heat pipes are a type of passive and efficient two-phase devices. Despite its wide applications in solar collectors, electronic cooling energy recovery systems, the heat pipe technology has been stagnant last two decades. Though, numerous designs to enhance evaporation mass transportation have explored since discovery, intrinsic limitation induced by filmwise condensation (FWC) condenser section not effectively addressed. In this study, sustainable dropwise (DWC), which can be 10 folds more than traditional FWC, was successfully on pipes. The effective thermal conductivity (keff) wickless enhanced 7 times higher one without Ni-Gr nanocomposite coatings. Besides drastically reduced resistance resulted from DWC fundamentally altering continuous film liquid flow into discrete droplet sliding, return evaporator gravity significantly accelerated. new mode also manage instability geyser boiling with rate further, promote keff. This study shows feasibility elevate technologies next level.
